Animals, both wild and humanified, are an integral part of Florian life. Looking after them pulls green karma, which makes their happiness part of the happiness of the Survivors. The rules for looking after animals are described in the Green Code.

The ethics of dealing with animals

The early Survivors were all pretty sure they wanted animals in their lives. The only one of them who had actually interacted with an animal was Zigsa, whose best friend in childhood had been Pabu. In Slag School most of the people had been taught that animals were dangerous and dirty and spread diseases and that the world was better off without them.

Once they had been thrown away in the radiopoisoned desert, the Survivors were free to question all of these ideas.

The hanyo idea of animals

The only purpose of the few animals that were left in the zoos, collections and meat farms of hanyo town was to provide sport and meat for the hanyos; the slags were taught that eating meat would make them sick, and that only hanyos had the tough constitution necessary to digest such a food.

The animals of the survivarium

Animals other than dogs occupied the central forest in the lower level of the Hub of Zigsa's Nest. Dogs and their taskers lived in the upper level. Dogs had access to all human areas of the survivarium except the baths.

The animals of the Florian Age

Once the forests began to return to the Earth, animals could also being to occupy suitable spaces. At first they lived only under basha canopies.
