Slag

A slag was a person whose job did not require that they come into contact with actual hanyos. They were also defined as holders of U-jobs, where the 'U' stands for 'Unseen'. The lowest status slags worked in the service territories serving other slags, while teh slightly more high status slags got to go into the corporate enclaves and clean and cook for the hanyos. Cleaners occupied spaces inside the walls were a light would come on to give them the all-clear to clean when all hanyos had left the space and were not likely to return. Cooks enjoyed the highest status, followed by RanDees.

Types of slags

There are five main types of slags, classified according to their work.

RanDees

These were techies who worked in labs and research facilities. After the Sweep of 2050 RanDees were increasingly subjected to the non-disclosure agreement whereby upon being hired they would have to undergo an operation to cut their nerves of speech. This was ostensibly done to protect proprietary information. RanDees had to communicate by writing on a small whiteboard slung around their necks.

Cooks

Cooks were the highest paid if not the most aspired-to job description in hanyo town.

Cleaners

The largest group among the slags, the cleaners were a very diverse group. Their supervisors would keep them in check with the constant threat of being busted down to the Service Territory cadre, or even worse, going to Corrections and ebign forced to take the Bully Qualifiers.

Fixers/Mechanics

Often the best educated in technical skills, and respected by other slags, but often bullied by hanyos who felt their expertise was a threat.

Factory Shell Fodder

These slags were human fuel for the Factory Shells, a type of technology that damaged its operator in life-threatening ways.

Slag Life

A slag's life began with her mother's marriage, which by 2050 had become a one- or two-year contract with Human Resources.
