Male Hypertoxic Syndrome

Male Hypertoxic Syndrome was the mysterious disease that created the hanyos. Tira revealed through her delving that in fact MHS was the result of a human invention, the Humane Choice vaccine invented by Dr Pradip Shankar.

Symptoms

MHS babies were born with hyperactive peripheral nervous systems. Their skins were so sensitive they could go into seizure if you merely picked them up. They mostly died of starvation as they could not feed, and drip insertion led to immediate fatal shock. Furthermore, their immune systems were in overdrive, such that even the most innocuous substances could lead to anaphylactic shock. If they could be kept alive for 6 to 8 months after birth, their immune systems would attack and destroy the errant nerves, leading to a loss in sensation similar to local anesthesia. Repeated attacks would lead to diebacks on the nerves until by age seven or so they were similar to normal kids and could be let out of isolation. Nerve death would continue into adulthood, such that by age 18 most hanyos had no fine touch sense and a very blunted crude touch sense. This would often lead them to be thrill seekers, fascinated by pain. They also had trouble controlling body temperature, and overheating or hypothermia were common causes of death after reckless endangerment. Sleep disturbance was a result of the fact that with their eyes closed in a silent room they would feel as if the world had ceased to exist.

History

The first hanyo births were recorded around 2025 in New Singapore, the flagship city of the Ramdhun Corporation, but within the next few months reports poured in from all over the world of similar tragic deaths among neonates. Almost immediately, media reports outside the Ramdhun territory expressed the suspicion that Pradip Shankar's vaccine might have played a role in the genesis of the disease. Another disease that cropped up among adults at the same time, known as globetrotter flu, was also implicated in the causes and aetiology of MHS, particularly as many of the fathers of MHS babies had never had the Human Choice treatment, yet they tended overwhelmingly to sire sons just like the men who had had the vaccine.

The One Thousand

In 2025, Dr Pradip Shankar, while still denying that he had any role in the rise of MHS, proposed a cure. He admitted one thousand of the newborn sons of the richest and most powerful men on earth to his specialised Shankar Clinics, along with their mother, and promised to save them if the world would give him one year of uninterrupted work on the problem. Left with no choice, and desperate to save their sons, the movers and the shakers of the world agreed. Portal:Contents
