Timeline of historical events

2007, the Root Year

2007 is called the Root Year in Florian terminology because after it the Protocol of Rightful Nocopy (promulgated 2037) came into retrospective effect, allowing the hanyo corporations to destroy any historical records post that year. Very few books and practically no digital records are to be found after 2007.

In this year, Pradip Shankar graduates in obstetrics and gynecology from the Chandigarh Medical College at the top of his class, specialising in IVF techniques, and marries his classmate Pria, a pediatrician. They set up a combined practice n Chandigarh.

2008

In 2008 Pradip Shankar gets into trouble. He makes an offhand comment about the fetus carried by the wife of Himmat Singh, a small-time mob boss, which leads Himmat Singh to believe it is a female and abort it. The fetus turns out to be male. enraged, Himmat Singh trashes Shankar's clinic and vows to break his legs if he ever practices again. Deeply shaken, Shankar retires and lives off his wife's earnings; her practice is booming. He goes into a deep depression and his wife starts to worry.

2009

In 2009 Pria Shankar manages to get her husband to come along on a medical reunion. There he meets some of their classmates and tells them his sob story. As he tells it, they nod and say they have faced similar pressures. 'No doctor should be subject to this,' Shankar exclaims. He remembers that he had been quite good at genetics when in college, and decides to pursue his own private research project in the field.

2010

in 2010 Shankar begins work on what is to become the Humane Choice vaccine. With his wife's money he equips a state-of-the-art gene lab in their spare bedroom and begins to look for a suitable retorvirus for the task. He plans to either knock out Z-bearing sperm or supercharge the Y-baaring ones, so that the probability of a man having sons, once he has taken the vaccine, will be very high. he also begins, cautiuosly, to post on social media, revealing no details, bat saying things like, 'Sex determination is a function of the male not the female. Shouldn't we give fathers their right to choose?' and seeing what came back.
